Cut Wood To Lenth
Use a miter or circular saw to cut all the pieces needed for the floating bed frame to the correct length.
To create a cleaner look, the plans made by Home DIY Dan use miter joints to use the DIY floating bed frame with LED lighting.
Info: A miter joint is a joint that joins two pieces of wood that are cut at a 45-degree angle.
The visible pieces of the floating bed frame (bottom frame exterior, top frame exterior, top decorative pieces) all utilize a miter joint.
Assemble Top And Bottom Frame Exterior
Use a drill to pre-drill holes in the floating bed frame to avoid splitting the wood.
Fasten the exterior portions of the bed frame together with wood screws.
Ensure the pieces are square.
Measure Placement For Horizontal Braces
On both the smaller bottom frame and the larger top frame, mark out the brace placements using a tape measure.
Make the horizontal braces roughly 16 inches apart, from center to center. This provides stability.
Install Horizontal Braces
After cutting the horizontal braces to length, use a drill to install the pieces.
Again, pre-drill the holes to avoid splitting the wood and ensure the braces are square to the floating bed frame’s exterior.
Install Vertical Braces
To make sure the top and bottom of the bed frames are strong, install vertical braces too. This also creates a base for the mattress on the top frame.
Cut the pieces to size, and offset them in each horizontal brace. This allows them to be so to be easily be screwed in place.
Evenly distribute the vertical braces in the DIY floating bed frame.
Attach Top Portion Of Frame To Bottom Portion
With the upper and lower sections of the bed frame complete, fasten them together with wood screws and glue.
Tip: You can also use metal brackets to secure the two frames together.
Info: The bottom portion is smaller than the top to create the illusion of the bed frame floating in mid-air.
Install Decorative Pieces
Align the top decorative pieces with the edge of the top portion of the DIY floating bed frame.
Install the decorative pieces on top of the frame using a drill and wood screws.
This portion will be visible around the edges of the mattress.
Sand Floating Bed Frame
Sand the top decorative pieces of wood and the exterior part of the frame with sandpaper.
These areas will be visible, so make them as smooth as possible.
Stain Floating Bed Frame
With a brush or lint-free rag, stain the decorative top and exterior, visible portions of the frame.
You only need to stain the areas you will see.
Apply wood stain according to the manufacturer’s directions.
When satisfied with the result, allow the stain to dry thoroughly.
Measure Particle Board
Using particle board will create an even surface to place the mattress on.
Measure the particle board so that it covers the area inside the top decorative pieces. It will sit on top of the frame braces.
If one piece of particle board won’t cover the entire area, cut as many pieces as you need to fit the space. You won’t see this portion of the bed frame, so it doesn’t need to be all one piece.
Tip: A chalk line will ensure you establish a straight cutline on large pieces of wood.
Cut Particle Board
Use a circular saw to cut the particle board to size, following the chalk line as a guide.
Install Particle Board
Use a drill and wood screws to fasten the particle board to the DIY floating bed frame braces.
Tip: If you’re using one piece of particle board, mark out the location of the braces before installation. This way, you know where to drill.
Install LED Lights
For this to be actual DIY floating bed frame with LED lighting plans, we can’t forget the lights!
Use LED light strips with adhesive backing on the frame.
Install them on the lower part of the frame (underneath the floating portion) for the best result.
Stick them on at the top of this lower portion so that you can’t see the lights themselves, only the stunning glow.
All that’s left to do now is place your mattress on top.
Now, turn the LED lights on, admire your handiwork, and think of all the money you’ve saved!
